Maurice Ravel’s piano music stands among the most refined and exacting in the repertoire. Often mistakenly associated with Impressionism, his writing is in fact characterised by precision, clarity, and an almost classical discipline of form. Every detail— texture, articulation, pedalling—is carefully controlled. Colour, for Ravel, is never incidental: it is inseparable from structure, rhythm, and articulation.
The solo works span a wide expressive range. From the fluid brilliance of Jeux d’eau to the stylised elegance of Menuet antique and the evocative miniatures of Miroirs, Ravel explores a world of subtle atmosphere and finely judged contrasts. In larger structures such as Gaspard de la nuit and le tombeau de Couperin, virtuosity is placed at the service of character and architecture, demanding from the pianist not only technical command but a highly cultivated ear.
This collection brings together virtually all of Ravel’s writing for solo piano, alongside a number of related versions and transcriptions. These include the Pavane pour une infante défunte in a version for four-hands, a solo transcription of Ma mère l’Oye, and revisions of La valse and a movement from Daphnis et Chloé. Such adaptations offer further insight into Ravel’s handling of texture and sonority across different forms.
Ravel’s piano writing requires an exceptional degree of control: clarity within complex textures, precision of rhythm, and a refined sense of colour. Beneath its apparent elegance lies a demanding and exacting craft, where every note has structural and expressive significance.
